Waste Treatment

We understand the impact of our business on the environment, so we are continually making efforts to increase the efficiency of the production processes and to reduce our environmental impact. From the standpoint of process outputs, the Enefit process differs from previous generations of shale oil processes. All of the energy within oil shale is used to produce commercial products: shale oil, high value retort gas and electricity.

Ash, which is by far the largest waste product, is free from organics and is classified as non-hazardous material. Furthermore, it is a valuable raw material used successfully in making portland cement in Estonia. Each ton of ash that we can recycle in the cement industry offsets nearly one ton of CO2 emissions that would otherwise be released in the cement production process. An important part of current developments is reducing our carbon footprint through CO2 capture.

Enefit has extensive experience in remediating unused ash stockpiles. In Estonia we also have a unique wind energy park built on top of a remediated stockpile, thus turning otherwise unproductive waste into a base for generating renewable wind energy.

  • Process waste
The waste is ash with an organic carbon content of 0%, which means it is suitable to recycle and is safer for the environment.
  • Water use
The shale oil retorting process does not use any water. Market-ready solutions exist for reducing auxiliary water needs.
  • Resource efficiency
Unlike other technologies, Enefit uses all of the oil shale that is mined, reducing the mining and disposal area.
