The electricity, heat and liquid fuels we consume affect the environment in a variety of ways. The main impacts are on the use of land and resources through waste creation and air and water pollution and it is clear that the combined effect of all these factors is leading to climate change. But it is not only energy consumption that affects the environment, all types of energy production do so too in one way or another. The impacts of the use of fossil fuels are discussed heatedly nowadays, but renewable and carbon-free technologies also have an environmental impact.

Enefit's main environmental policies

Enefit takes important steps at major expense every year to lessen its environmental impact. These steps aim to increase the use of renewable energy resources, help cut environmental emissions and use natural resources more efficiently.

  • The largest investment in environmental protection of the financial year of 2010 was the 46 million euro installation of DeSOx cleaning equipment at the Narva power plants to cut air pollution.
  • Several major investment projects are in preparation to improve waste handling, environmental protection and waste recycling.

In the face of growing concerns about global warming, carbon intensity has become an important aspect in assessing liquid fuels production technologies. In 2010 Enefit together with the help of Jacobs Consultancy performed a life-cycle carbon intensity study for the production of liquid fuels from oil shale in Estonia.

  • Water

Production of liquid fuels from oil shale requires significant amount of water. Although abundant in Estonia, water is a scarce resource in many parts of the world, where oil shale recourses are available. Therefore we have put a lot of effort into reducing the water consumption of Enefit280 technology.

Enefit has a wealth of experience in mine remediation. We often say that our business starts and ends with mining. A key step in the mining process is the restoration and rehabilitation of mining areas.

  • EROI – Efficiency

EROI – Energy Return on Investment is an important measure in the assessment of energy production processes. EROI is the ratio of energy produced to energy consumed and shows the efficiency of energy carrier production process, the strongest benefit on Enefit technology.
